Exploring Quality in Family Child Care
This professional learning series supports a deeper understanding of the Satellite Accreditation Standards. In these one-hour monthly events at naptime, you will learn the evidence-based rationale behind a high-quality standard and discover ideas for practical implementation in your program.

Selecting High-Quality Materials for Open-Ended Play
August 4
Children in early learning programs with high-quality materials develop better cognitive, literacy, and math skills. This course will dive into the characteristics of high-quality early learning materials and discover how it supports children’s development. Educators will learn how to choose developmentally appropriate materials for a mixed-age group through considering the program’s number and variety of options, incorporating more open-ended than closed-ended materials, and utilizing budget-friendly, sustainable choices.

In this session, we define process-based art, explore the importance of process art, and discuss strategies for offering process art opportunities in family child care.

Our evening learning opportunities offer an in depth exploration of a topic based on a reported interest or identified need. Each two-hour event combines essential information with meaningful practice and encourages active participation through reflection, discussion, and small group activities.

The Power of Experimenting: Science Activities for Your Program
July 15
As curious learners, children use their perceptual skills to continuously explore how things work. This course will explore ways to incorporate experimentation into your family child care’s science curriculum through nature-based learning, transformation activities, and construction play. Participants will learn strategies for supporting children’s emerging scientific skills through purposeful interactions and intentional planning of child-led learning opportunities.

Our Milwaukee learning opportunities encourage community building and professional development through a shared meal and collaborative exploration of a topic. These opportunities are open to programs participating in Upward Milwaukee or Satellite’s accreditation system.

Play-Based Literacy Curriculum in Family Child Care
August 18
Early literacy, which includes phonological awareness, print concepts, and alphabet knowledge, impact children’s later reading and writing achievement. This course will explore how to incorporate early literacy curriculum in a mixed-age environment through play-based learning opportunities. Educators will learn strategies for supporting children’s early literacy through word play, storytelling, movement games, music, and environmental print.

Safety Saturday is a full day of free health and safety training offered annually to early childhood educators affiliated with Satellite.
